SMART Power Flow Controllers - A Necessity for Future Power Grid

Power flow control techniques have been practiced, from using inductors, capacitors, transformers and load tap changers in the earlier days of electrical engineering to power electronics-based solutions in recent years. Even though the costs and complexities of the available solutions vary widely, the basic underlying theory of power flow control is still the same as it has always been. The question is which solution one should employ. The answer depends on knowing what the true need is. The power industry’s pressing need for the most economical ways to transfer bulk power along a desired path may be met by building new transmission lines, which is a long and costly process. Alternately, it may be quicker and cheaper to utilize the existing transmission lines more efficiently. The key is to identify the underutilized transmission lines and harness their dormant capacities to increase the power flows to the lines’ thermal limits using the most cost-effective and time-tested solutions.

ExaGraph: Graph and combinatorial methods for enabling exascale applications

Abstract:

Combinatorial algorithms in general and graph algorithms in particular play a critical enabling role in numerous scientific applications. However, the irregular memory access nature of these algorithms makes them one of the hardest algorithmic kernels to implement on parallel systems. With tens of billions of hardware threads and deep memory hierarchies, the exascale computing systems in particular pose extreme challenges in scaling graph algorithms. The codesign center on combinatorial algorithms, ExaGraph, was established to design and develop methods and techniques for efficient implementation of key combinatorial (graph) algorithms chosen from a diverse set of exascale applications. Algebraic and combinatorial methods have a complementary role in the advancement of computational science and engineering, including playing an enabling role on each other. In this presentation, we survey the algorithmic and software development activities performed under the auspices of ExaGraph and detail experimental results from GPU-accelerated pre-exascale and exascale systems.

In this talk we will start with the basic concept of transformer with encoder and decoder. We will discuss how domain knowledge can be injected into LLM through retrieval augmented generation (RAG) and fine tuning. We will also discuss the concept of LLM agent where complex design tasks can be done by the agent through planning, action with other tools and reasoning. An even more advanced technique will involve the LLM optimizing a design through optimization by prompt. We will conclude with the concept of foundational models for signal integrity and power integrity as an example of how we can tie LLM and Generative AI to complete a complex engineering design task.  Speaker Bio:    Chris Cheng is a Distinguished Technologist at the Storage Division of Hewlett-Packard Enterprise. He is responsible for managing all high speed, analog/mixed signal designs and hardware machine learning development within the Storage Division. He also held senior engineering positions in SUN Microsystems where he developed the original GTL system bus with Bill Gunning. He was a Principal Engineer in Intel where he led high speed processor bus design team. He was the first hardware engineer in 3PAR and guided their high-speed design effort until it was acquired by Hewlett Packard.

Global coverage to address the significant portion of the global population that remains unconnected or
under-connected is expected to be achieved through the deployment of non-terrestrial networks (NTNs), which
encompass a range of technologies such as High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPSs), Satellites (GEO, MEO, LEO), and
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). In the realm of cutting-edge wireless technologies such as 6G and beyond, the goal is
to seamlessly integrate NTN nodes into terrestrial networks. Currently, there are isolated deployment examples, such as
LEO mega-constellations. This presentation focuses on the design of a multi-layer airborne backhaul network, utilizing
HAPSs and rotary-wing UAVs to establish free space optical (FSO) backhaul connections with ground-based stations.
HAPS fleets operate in circular tracks at stratospheric altitudes. Conversely, rotary-wing UAVs operate at medium and
lower altitudes, complementing HAPSs. The airborne backhaul architecture requires careful design to ensure
uninterrupted connectivity with ground-based stations, eliminating coverage gaps. The presentation outlines a
systematic approach for designing FSO-based airborne backhaul systems, detailing the process of determining the
appropriate number of airborne layers, HAPS tracks, HAPS units per track, the number of UAVs at lower altitudes, the
operating altitude for middle-layer UAVs, and the number of laser sources per airborne node based on a given coverage
area.This presentation will cover the importance of signal processing in the IT section, applications, future prospects as
well as what you need to succeed in the subfield of electrical engineering. It will also cover how classical implementation

On-Chip Antennas: The Last Barrier to True RF System-on-Chip

Abstract:

Antennas are integral part of wireless communication devices and traditionally have remained off the Integrated Circuits (ICs which are also commonly known as chips) resulting in large sized modules. In the last decade, the increased level of integration provided by silicon technologies and emerging applications at millimeter wave frequencies (such as 5G/6G) has helped to achieve true System-on-Chip solutions bringing the antennas on the chip. This is because antenna sizes at these frequencies become small enough for practical on-chip realization. Though, there are a number of benefits of putting antennas on-chip, such as monolithic integration resulting in compact systems, robustness due to absence of bond wires or other connection mechanisms between the antenna and the circuits, lower cost due to mass manufacturing in standard CMOS processes, etc. However, there are a number of challenges to overcome, for instance dealing with silicon substrate high conductivity and permittivity (resulting in poor radiation efficiency), metal stack-up and layout restrictions, and on-chip characterization through delicate probes, etc. Furthermore, the co-design of circuits and antenna, which sometime have contradicting requirements, need knowledge of both the domains.  This talk aims to discuss the above challenges in detail as well as the proposed solutions. In particular, many design examples will be shown for the gain and radiation efficiency enhancement of on-chip antennas through artificial magnetic conductors. The talk will conclude with the upcoming trends in the field of on-chip antennas.

Thomas Ferrin of UCSF will describe 3D imaging of the Corona virus.  He will be bringing virtual reality imaging equipment for demonstration and for use by the audience.

Interactive computer graphics has been used for more than 60 years to visualize and analyze 3-D molecular structures such as DNA and proteins, and has contributed to the development of many drugs and, more recently, vaccines that are in common use today. Today, VR headsets enable structural biologists to immerse themselves within these molecules in order to gain a better understanding of how they function. This talk will recount the evolution of interactive molecular graphics from the early days of calligraphic CRT displays to the current use of VR headsets such as the one shown here.

Netflix’s journey in enhancing its machine learning capabilities led to the creation of Axion, a revolutionary fact store that is designed to optimize the quality and accessibility of data for machine learning algorithms. This talk will delve into the evolution of Axion, highlighting its critical role in advancing Netflix’s recommendation systems. It will also explore the challenges faced in managing and utilizing large-scale data, and how Axion’s innovative architecture addresses these challenges.

You will gain insights into the technical intricacies of Axion, including its four main components: (1) the fact-logging client, (2) ETL (extract, transform, load), (3) the query client, and (4) the data quality infrastructure. You will learn about the unique approaches employed by Axion for data logging, transformation, and querying that ensure efficient and reliable data access for its sophisticated machine learning architecture.

Seeing Through Walls: An Electromagnetic Perspective

The ability of electromagnetic waves to penetrate through various building materials, together with advances in design of ultra-wideband compact radar modules, has made see-thru-wall technology, also known as Through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI), of increasing importance in a wide range of both civilian and defense applications. In this lecture, an overview of various TWRI technologies, including the latest research in several areas important in the design of TWRI systems, will be presented. Electromagnetic-based techniques for wall parameter estimation to mitigate the adverse wall effects and enhance the efficient imaging and classification of targets within and/or behind walls will be discussed. For efficient imaging, details of fast polarimetric and tomographic based imaging algorithms for both 2D and 3D scenarios will be given, and imaging results for various realistic scenarios using both numerical simulations and laboratory measurements will be presented, Development of wideband and
ultrawideband antenna arrays, which are essential in successful implementation of see-thru-wall technology, together with hardware descriptions of two constructed portable systems will conclude the presentation. Throughout, I will include a personal perspective from my own two-decade journey in this interdisciplinary research area.

2.5D Silicon Photonics Interposer Flip Chip Attach

Abstract:

In the field of silicon photonics, advanced packaging integration is key to achieving product performance. Flip chip attach of Silicon Photonics devices poses new challenges and limitations not encountered for flip chip attach and underfill of mainstream silicon devices. The first challenge in 2.5D silicon photonics die integration is its susceptibility to cracking during downstream reflow processing. The second challenge is to keep the edge-coupling waveguide facet of the silicon photonics die uncontaminated after all MCM assembly processes, for optical coupling. The third challenge is the post-reflow flip chip standoff variation and the underfill coverage under the silicon photonics die that affect optical coupling sensitivity between the edge-coupling waveguide and the planar lightwave circuit (PLC). We have successfully demonstrated flip chip attach of silicon photonics optical light engine (OLE) on an organic substrate using both thermocompression bonding and mass reflow processes with custom tooling to achieve defect-free and uniform standoff bonding of Pb-free flip chip bumps. Various underfill control methods were explored to achieve maximum coverage and avoid underfill creeping onto the waveguide facet. Furthermore, we achieved stable optical coupling post-stress testing. More investigation would be necessary to further improve coupling efficiency stability.

Abstract: Cities worldwide are transitioning quickly towards a low-carbon environment, high quality of living, and resource-efficient economy. Artificial Intelligence of Things (IoT) is a combination of Artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to enable autonomous decision-making, data analytics, and system optimization. This talk will share our experiences on AIoT for smart cities. The first work is called Green IoT, which provides artificial intelligence and open data for sustainable city development. In this work, we developed an intelligent IoT system for air pollution monitoring in Uppsala, Sweden. The second work, called Smart Water Auditing, uses IoT and machine learning to provide insights into how much water is consumed in different domestic use categories. It aims to reduce water consumption and raise awareness of people's water consumption habits. This talk will present our AIoT system designs, machine learning algorithms, implementation, and experimental results in Hong Kong and Sweden.

                                                                           

Bio: Dr. Edith C.H. Ngai is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Hong Kong. Before joining HKU in 2020, she was an Associate Professor in the Department of Information Technology at Uppsala University, Sweden. Her research interests include IoT, edge intelligence, smart cities, and smart health. Her co-authored papers received a Best Paper Award in QShine 2023 and Best Paper Runner-Up Awards in ACM/IEEE IPSN 2013 and IEEE IWQoS 2010. She was an Area Editor of IEEE Internet of Things Journal from 2020 to 2022. She is an Associate Editor in IEEE Transactions of Mobile Computing and IEEE Transactions of Industrial Informatics. She has been a TPC co-chair in IEEE SmartCity 2015, IEEE GreenCom 2022, and IEEE/ACM IWQoS 2024. She was a project leader of the "Green IoT" in Sweden, which was named on IVA's 100 List by the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences in 2020. She received a Meta Policy Research Award in Asia Pacific in 2022. She is a Distinguished Lecturer in the IEEE Communication Society from 2023 to 2024.

With the prosperity of edge computing, massive users and devices at the network edge are more actively involved in the networks, pushing the information collection, computation, storage, and communications more towards end users. In these more decentralized systems, how to enable efficient and trustworthy interactions among different parties becomes an essential issue. 

Blockchain has been considered as a promising approach to facilitate the establishment of decentralized trustworthy computing systems with non-repudiated information records. For example, Bitcoin has attracted wide attention as a secure and decentralized platform to enable peer-to-peer exchanges of digital currency. Ethereum then generalizes blockchain as a state machine and enables smart contracts, a piece of code that can support complex logic and be self-executed when certain conditions are met. Such generalization enables blockchain to potentially serve as a computing infrastructure and opens new opportunities for blockchain to facilitate secure and decentralized interactions among any parties without making high trust assumptions about them.

In this talk, we will discuss some key characteristics of blockchain and a few promising applications of blockchain that can facilitate security and trust among multiple parties. Some examples include designing a secure and efficient multi-signature scheme to facilitate multi-party approval process on Fabric, an enterprise blockchain platform; applying blockchain to secure software updates for resource-constrained IoT networks; and to facilitate fair trading in transactive energy market.
