SMART Power Flow Controllers – A Necessity for Future Power Grid
Date:
May 17th
2:00 PM (1 hour)
Location:
1 Grand Ave
San Luis Obispo, CA
Abstract:

Power flow control techniques have been practiced, from using inductors, capacitors, transformers and load tap changers in the earlier days of electrical engineering to power electronics-based solutions in recent years. Even though the costs and complexities of the available solutions vary widely, the basic underlying theory of power flow control is still the same as it has always been. The question is which solution one should employ. The answer depends on knowing what the true need is. The power industry’s pressing need for the most economical ways to transfer bulk power along a desired path may be met by building new transmission lines, which is a long and costly process. Alternately, it may be quicker and cheaper to utilize the existing transmission lines more efficiently. The key is to identify the underutilized transmission lines and harness their dormant capacities to increase the power flows to the lines’ thermal limits using the most cost-effective and time-tested solutions.

The presentation is designed to provide the basic principles of power flow control theory, an overview of the most commonly used power flow controllers, and future trends. The audience will hear from an expert who actually designed and commissioned a number of power electronics-based FACTS controllers since their inceptions in the 1990s. Two reference books are as follows.

IEEE Brew with the Crew - “Clean Energy Deployment for Resilience – Value of Field Demonstration to Pave the Way"
Date:
May 16th
3:45 PM (1.2 hours)
Location:
Virtual meeting
Idaho Falls, ID
Abstract:

Abstract: In the U.S., there are at least 500 municipal, electric co-operative, and publicly owned utilities
with local hydropower in their generation portfolio. Ideally, these hydropower plants can play a crucial role
of local grid resilience and support critical loads in the event of weather affected transmission failure or bulk
power system black out. Yet, many of them lack the capability of local grid and critical load’s stable
restoration due to their small (at most 10 MW) size. Energy storage, such as Li-Ion battery or ultracapacitor
can theoretically stabilize such small hydro based local grid restoration, but such proof-of-concept must be
demonstrated before any storage deployment is decided. Field demonstration of integrating an energy
storage with an actual hydropower plant, black start, and critical load restoration is time sensitive, and
coordination among multiple stakeholders for such execution can be overwhelmed. This presentation will
share the challenges faced, de-risking strategy applied, lessons learned, and ongoing activities based on
two INL-led black start field demonstrations. The presentation will also introduce the entire team and
collaboration behind these demonstrations.

Bio: S M Shafiul Alam is a research scientist in the Power & Energy Systems Group of INL’s Energy &
Environment Science & Technology Directorate. His work primarily focuses on technical assessment,
experimentation, and demonstration of hybrid energy systems such as hydropower with energy storage to
enhance operational flexibility while upholding reliability and resilience. Shafiul served as the Technical
Lead of 1) planning, and execution of ultracapacitor hardware-in-the-loop simulation, 2) onsite deployment
of micro PMU and data management for the preparation of April 2021 Idaho Falls Power Black Start Field
Demonstration. He also led the laboratory experiment and other technical activities in preparation of the
July 2023 Fall River Electric Cooperative Black Start Field Demonstration. Additional information on his
research activities is available through Google Scholar.

Topic:

Challenges in Battery Monitoring Systems for Electrical Vehicles

Abstract:

Electrical vehicles will become the standard in private transport the coming decade. Since the battery is still the main component that will determine cost and driving range, a good battery control is the main component in an eV system.

A battery management system consists of 2 components : a current measurement system and a voltage monitoring system. Both have their own specific problems.

We will first discuss the different techniques to measure current : using a shunt, a Rogowski coil or using a magnetic sensor.

Next the voltage measurement chain will be tackled including techniques for dealing with the high voltages of a battery pack.

Speaker Biography:

Tim Piessens received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Leuven, Belgium, in 1998 and 2003, respectively. Overview of NEDO STREAM R&D Project for System Stability Aimed at Mass Introduction of Renewable Energy
Date:
May 15th
2:30 PM (1 hour)
Abstract:

In October 2020, the government of Japan committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. In October 2021, they announced a goal of reaching a renewable energy sources (RES) ratio of approximately 36-38% by 2030. Achieving these targets through national research and development projects is accompanied by high expectations, with a solid emphasis on overcoming grid constraints and maintaining system stability to utilize RES as the primary power source.

One of these projects is a New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) initiative called "Future-generation Power Network Stabilization Technology Development for Utilization of Renewable Energy As the Major Power Source (STREAM)." This project aims to develop technologies for practical applications of inverter-based resources (IBRs) with synthetic inertia and the motor-driven synchronous generator (M-G sets) powered by RES as countermeasures against low inertia and short-circuit capacity reduction and to verify these effects.

This webinar showcases 1)the current status and future goals of RES integration in Japan, 2) technical challenges in power system stability (grid constraints) for achieving the aforementioned goals, and 3)an overview and preliminary results of the STREAM Project.

Pumping Iron: Revealing Counterintuitive Mechanisms of Magnetization Dynamics
Date:
May 15th
1:00 PM (2 days)
Location:
Berkeley, CA
Abstract:

Thin-film magnetic metals are workhorses in nanomagnetic devices, including sensors, memory, and
oscillators. Yet, even for the most widely used ferromagnets, we still do not fully understand the
mechanisms of key phenomena — such as magnetic damping and spin-orbit torques — for critical
device applications. This lecture will highlight progress in revealing rather counterintuitive
mechanisms of magnetization dynamics in thin films, especially those based on iron. Depending on the
audience, I will delve into one or both of the following recent findings: (1) a fundamental damping
mechanism from “procrastinating” electrons in clean iron films; (2) spin-orbit torque from subtle
symmetry breaking in iron-nickel alloy films. I aim to convey that even seemingly mundane magnetic
metals can exhibit intriguing foundational science, offering fresh perspectives on materials for
nanomagnetic devices.

The Battle Against Global Counterfeiting Continues
Date:
May 14th
7:00 PM (2 hours)
Location:
567 Yosemite Dr
Milpitas, CA
Abstract:

This event will be available live at SEMI, as well as over Zoom. Get to SEMI by 6:30pm to network – and enjoy great pizza and refreshments! All attendees MUST register using the Eventbrite form (see link).

Counterfeiters are more active than ever, making products that are clever imitations that consumers cannot easily discern from the real thing. Estimated at .5 trillion annually and approximately 3% of world trade, it is the largest criminal enterprise in the world. American consumers tend to purchase the highest share of counterfeit goods at around 60-80% of all counterfeit goods sold. Counterfeits go way beyond consumer end-products to include components used in the automotive, electronics, aerospace, and defense industries.

In this talk, CNSV member Rosemary Coates will detail how counterfeiters have attained this huge foothold in the world market, as well as how Amazon and Chinese retailers such as Alibaba, Taobao, JD, and others are aggressively tracking and eliminating counterfeits on their platforms through new technologies such as invisible pigments, QR codes, photo mapping, and RFID. She will also discuss why industrial products and electronic components are harder to track, and the ties that counterfeiting enterprises have with terrorist organizations, international arms dealers, and drug cartels. With billions of dollars to be made through counterfeiting, the problem is expected to continue its daunting growth.

IEEE Tech Talk: Getting Started with Systems Engineering and Requirements Management
Date:
May 14th
5:30 PM (1.3 hours)
Location:
Admissions and Alumni Building,
Seattle, WA
Abstract:

In today's engineering environment the need for requirements and requirements management is a given. Any industry can benefit from the use of Systems Engineering. Good requirements help keep projects on track, ensure the needs of the customer/user are met, and provide a baseline for the V&V team. A good process and tool can prevent scope creep as changes are managed and traced. This talk will describe best practices in getting started with requirements management tools. While many tools are introduced as silver bullets, the reality is that the introduction of a process and tool takes time and effort to learn and impacts processes. Schedules will likely expand and not compress on the first project to use a tool. I'll walk through an example of how introducing SE can help a company focus on results and create an efficient process to document projects and build the required deliverables.

The Meandering Path to Regulating Face Recognition and AI
Date:
May 14th
5:30 PM (1 hour)
Abstract:

Recent years have seen impressive advances in face recognition, machine learning, and generative AI technologies, and they are being increasingly deployed in a wide variety of applications. Yet they have also raised serious concerns with respect to privacy, bias, fairness, and serious misuse by individuals, companies, and governments. Some civil liberties and advocacy groups have been raising dire warnings and promoting legislation to ban such technologies. Legislative bodies at various levels are addressing these issues, sometimes in piecemeal or patchwork fashion and with limited information. We will review the current landscape and ask the question:  As technologists, what is our role in the public debate and the legislative process? Let’s discuss.

Towards Programmable Smart Buildings
Date:
May 13th
5:00 PM (2 hours)
Abstract:

Abstract:

The built environment has a data problem. The buildings, cities, water treatment plants, and other human-made systems produce more data now than ever before, opening new possibilities of using data to optimize operation, reduce energy consumption, predict performance, and identify faults. However, the complexity, heterogeneity, and high degree of churn of these systems makes it expensive and difficult to develop software for them. Models, control sequences, data analytics, and other software-based solutions must often be rewritten from scratch for each environment in which they will be deployed. The process of discovering and accessing data is further exacerbated by the lack of standardized structured representations of built environment systems. These challenges significantly impede the adoption of data-driven sustainable practices at societal scale.

This talk will explore the use of semantic knowledge graphs to normalize descriptions of the built environment, specifically smart buildings, and reduce the cost of developing and deploying data-driven software in these settings. First, I will describe how ontologies can constrain knowledge graphs to produce useful abstractions of complex cyber-physical systems, as typified by the Brick ontology for smart buildings. Elements of this work are being adapted into new knowledge graph standards for buildings. Next, I will show how knowledge graphs enable novel programming models for "portable software" where programs can adapt their own operation to individual environments, based on queries against the knowledge graph. The talk will also show how these emerging use cases for knowledge graphs contrast with prevailing approaches towards knowledge graph maintenance and management and give rise to new methods for specifying and repairing knowledge graphs. Finally, I will show how these new technologies enable novel applications for smart buildings.

IEEE -Quantum Technologies: Threat and Security.
Date:
May 13th
8:00 AM (1.0 hour)
Abstract:

Quantum Computing is often presented as one of the most promising technologies of the 21st century, a
total disruption, a revolution. Governments, technologists, marketers, investors, and analysts project
that Quantum Computing will solve today's impossible problems with classical computers.
However, the wonders of this emerging technology of computation also give rise to a new threat vector
named Q-Day or Quantum Attacks, which means a threat to the current Communication Security due
to the Quantum Computer’s future power to break asymmetric encryption and speed up brute force
attacks for symmetric encryption. Therefore, communication security needs revolutionary and
innovative solutions, a complete cryptographic system, and new technologies supporting various
aspects of CIA triad and Privacy protection.
The Question arises: Can we develop such a scheme of secure communication that cannot be
broken?
Quantum Communication technologies might provide that by harnessing the laws of nature and Post
Quantum Cryptographic solutions might provide that by finding more complex mathematical problems,
but is that the answer we look for in cybersecurity?
In this talk, I will explain what a quantum computer is, what a quantum advantage or quantum
supremacy is, and why the world is thrown into a quantum race. I also will tackle the application side of
quantum computation as a threat vector to our communication security and the state of the art of this
technology in relation to cybersecurity. The technological solutions proposed to mitigate the quantum
threat will be explained, and the talk will conclude with further steps required for achieving
communication and information security.

New Frontiers in Terahertz Technology
Date:
May 9th
6:00 PM (2 hours)
Abstract:

Although unique potentials of terahertz waves for chemical identification, material characterization, biological sensing, and medical imaging have been recognized for quite a while, the relatively poor performance, higher costs, and bulky nature of current terahertz systems continue to impede their deployment in field settings. In this talk, I will describe some of our recent results on developing fundamentally new terahertz electronic/optoelectronic components and imaging/spectrometry architectures to mitigate performance limitations of existing terahertz systems. In specific, I will introduce new designs of high-performance photoconductive terahertz sources that utilize plasmonic nanoantennas to offer terahertz radiation at record-high power levels of several milliwatts – demonstrating more than three orders of magnitude increase compared to the state of the art. I will describe that the unique capabilities of these plasmonic nanoantennas can be further extended to develop terahertz detectors and heterodyne spectrometers with quantum-level detection sensitivities over a broad terahertz bandwidth at room temperatures, which has not been possible through existing technologies. To achieve this significant performance improvement, plasmonic antennas and device architectures are optimized for operation at telecommunication wavelengths, where very high power, narrow linewidth, wavelength tunable, compact and cost-effective optical sources are commercially available. Therefore, our results pave the way to compact and low-cost terahertz sources, detectors, and spectrometers that could offer numerous opportunities for e.g., medical imaging and diagnostics, atmospheric sensing, pharmaceutical quality control, and security screening systems. And finally, I will briefly highlight our research activities on development of new types of high-performance terahertz passive components (e.g., modulators, tunable filters, and beam deflectors) based on novel reconfigurable meta-films.

Overview of SETI Signal Processing: In Search of Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence
Date:
May 9th
6:00 PM (2 hours)
Location:
Soda Hall
Berkeley, CA
Abstract:

Abstract-

SETI, or the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, attempts to answer one of humanity’s oldest questions: Are we alone in the universe? While astronomers have devoted significant effort to finding exoplanets and trying to observe evidence of remote astro-biology, a parallel exploration involves observation of “technosignatures”, or radio signals that originate outside the solar system with characteristics suggesting an intelligent source.

In many ways radio SETI is a special class of communications problem in the realm of electrical engineering, with aspects of game theory in the mix. Consider the challenges: the signal is unknown, and may be intentional (a beacon) or unintentional (involving navigation or communications). The transmit frequency is unknown. If a limited message is sent, the modulation will be unknown, and even if bits are produced, the message must be decoded. Energy or geometry may limit persistence, so only a small fraction of observations in any pointing direction will have a chance at detection. Without knowledge of the signal, matched filtering is not possible. Link budgets may force limits on the signal bandwidth (narrowband tones) or time duration (pulse trains).

This talk will introduce the SETI problem and describe the scope of efforts underway in the radio SETI community. Search strategies to maximize detection rate will be described, and narrowband SETI algorithms will be introduced. In recent years, SETI search capabilities have vastly improved with the use of interferometric arrays covering GHz-class bandwidths, commensal observing, and the use of racks of GPU-enhanced servers, significantly raising the potential for new discoveries.

Voltage Regulation Schemes for Utility and Industrial Application
Date:
May 6th
3:00 PM (1 hour)
Location:
ECS
Long Beach, CA
Abstract:

Electric power sources are frequently located away from population centers. Therefore, the electricity must be transported from the power sources to consumers through transmission and distribution lines. The voltage changes its magnitude and phase angle at any point along a line due to the voltage drop across the line impedance, which is caused by the flow of current in the line. However, the voltage at a point-of-common-coupling with a load must be maintained within the regulatory limits. Voltage regulation techniques have been practiced in power grid applications with the use of inductors, capacitors, transformers and load tap changers (LTCs) since the earlier days of electrical engineering. However, the latest trend is to use more and more power electronics-based solutions. Even though the costs of the available solutions vary widely, the basic underlying theory of voltage regulation is still the same as it has always been. The voltage control techniques are applicable in electric transmission lines as well as various other applications, such as motor drives, flicker control, harmonic mitigation, and so on. In examining the various solutions for voltage regulation, the presenter discusses how these solutions address both functional needs and cost demands.
The presentation is designed to provide the basic principles of voltage regulation theory, an overview of the most commonly used voltage regulators, and future trends.

LMAG Xcom
Date:
May 2nd
4:00 PM (1 hour)
Abstract:

The Oakland/EastBay Life Members Affiliate Group Executive Committee met via Zoom on May 2, 2024.   Attending were Maureen Vavra, Chair, Mickey Mantle, Vice Chair; Larry Moon, Secretary; and Karl Yang, Treasurer.

Curt Rowe, the new webmaster for the OEB Section, also attended and was introduced by Maureen.  There followed some discussion of future use of our web site being developed.  Larry mentioned that he had several power point presentations from past events that he has not been able to upload to the existing site.

Maureen asked that committee members upload a photograph for inclusion in the web page.  (mug shot)

Karl gave a treasurer’s report showing our bank balance at 05.

Most discussion centered around the upcoming event on June 5th.  There was agreement to plan on a buffet style format reverting to ordering from the menu if the facility’s minimum requirement of 25 persons was not met.  A price of for IEEE members and for non-IEEE members was agreed upon.  It was thought that attendees from other Sections could be charged the non-member rate.  Subsequently Larry discovered that there was no way to differentiate between geographical units, the options being between membership grades, and non-members.

It was  recognized the vTools announcement was becoming overdue and Mickey offered to reach out to the speaker and get the information needed by Monday.  In the meantime Larry will put out an eNotice announcing the meeting subject and date, pending creation of the event in vTools.

There was some discussion of future events.  Something involving AI, and an event at the Hornet, were mentioned. The time frame for the next event is late third or early fourth quarter.

There was some discussion of joint sponsorship of events and more collegiality between groups and sections. Larry suggested that this was a topic that should be discussed at the Bay Aria Council level, there appearing to be little contact between Sections at this time.

The next executive committee meetings will be June 6th then July11th.

Convergence of AI, Physics, Computing, and Control for Energy Transformation by Dr. Qiuhua Huang
Date:
May 2nd
2:00 PM (1 hour)
Abstract:

Abstract: Energy transformation from decarbonized power systems, distributed energy resources, to building and transportation electrification is vital to meet clean energy goals in all counties and tackle climate changes. It also poses significant challenges in managing, optimizing and controlling the resulting complex energy systems. In the era of unprecedented technological advancement, the synergy between artificial intelligence (AI), physics, computing, and control systems presents unparalleled opportunities for addressing these challenges and revolutionizing the energy landscape. This talk explores the convergence of these disciplines and its profound implications for energy transformation. An integrated framework based on the idea of Convergence of AI, Physics, Computing, and Control is developed. At the heart of this convergence lies the fusion of AI with principles of physics, e.g., leveraging AI algorithms to model complex physical phenomena and exploiting physics to enhance the efficiency and robustness of AI algorithms. Moreover, computing technologies serve as the backbone of this interdisciplinary synergy, facilitating data analytics and decision-making in energy operations. In tandem with AI and computing, control theory plays a pivotal role in orchestrating the dynamics of energy transformation. This presentation delves into implementation of the convergence framework in two case studies, i.e., intelligent emergency control decision support in power system control rooms and intelligent energy management of a community. Finally, this talk also discusses the potential of this convergency framework, when combined with new hardware and software platform, for transforming the grid operation and control from the control rooms to the grid edge.

Dr. Qiuhua Huang is an Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at Colorado School of Mines (Mines). Admission fee may apply
Abstract:

BUSS’24 is a two-day, in-person event — May 2-3, 2024 at SEMI Hdqtrs, Silicon Valley, CA USA  Visit www.ieee-buss.org

Unfortunately, we have reached the capacity of our facilities.  Please plan to join us next year for BUSS'25!

We are living in the era of heterogenous integration driven by fast, efficient and big data computing resources at our fingertips. The mega-monolithic silicon chip is a thing of the past, replaced with 3D heterogenous integration of chiplets onto a platform made of an organic build-up substrate. Volume manufacturers of build-up substrates are entirely based in Asia, leaving a desert in the US. Volume build-up substrates used by major IDMs are manufactured in Asian countries including Taiwan, Japan and China.
However, there are multiple activities starting up in the US, and this is why a gathering of the US players is important. This symposium is geared for all those involved in the supply chain of build-up substrates in the US, as well as users. As the US Congress debates H.R. 3249, the Protecting Circuit Boards and Substrates (PCBS) Act, this Symposium is an opportunity for all build-up substrate players to meet, network and cohesively work with funding agencies who will be invited to this symposium to focus on onshoring build-up substrate production and utilization.

Guest Lecture Focus
Self-driving cars have been a dream from almost the time the automobile was invented. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), this dream has seemingly become reality with driverless commercial operations already taking place in a handful of cities around the world. However, the recent tragic accident involving a pedestrian and a Cruise self-driving car, as well as a number of high-profile Tesla crashes, raise the possibility that such
systems may not actually be as capable as envisioned, and questions have arisen about their safety both nationally and internationally. Given these concerns, it is important to step back and analyze both the actual safety records of these vehicles and just why AI is struggling to operate safely under all conditions in autonomous vehicles.

This lecture will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of AI in self-driving cars, as well as in all safety-critical applications, and lay out a roadmap for safe integration of these technologies on public roadways.

Evaluation of Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces for Wireless Communications
Date:
April 25th
6:15 PM (1 hour)
Location:
Holmes Hall
Honolulu, HI
Abstract:

As wireless networks transition into higher frequency bands, wireless signals tend to have smaller ranges and the inability to penetrate objects as well. An intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can offer improved coverage in wireless networks by redirecting wireless signals around objects that obstruct the signal’s line-of-sight path. IRSs are comprised of an array of unit cells which enables the redirection of an incoming signal to an anomalous angle due to a phase gradient formed across the surface. Traditional IRSs use PIN or varactor diodes to change the reflection phase response of a unit cell. However, liquid metal is an alternative method to control the reconfigurability of the reflective element. By changing the shape and size of the liquid metal reflective element, the unit cell’s phase can vary. In this work, we develop a testing setup for evaluating IRSs and metasurfaces to ensure that they are performing as expected. To evaluate these surfaces, we compare the measured and simulated bistatic radar cross section (RCS). We explore the effects of the propagation environment and a processing technique called time-gating to achieve accurate measurements.

IEEE SPS SCV - Establishing trust in online media assets: What does it mean and can it be achieved?
Date:
April 25th
5:00 PM (2 hours)
Abstract:

Today’s images arise from many sources: digital cameras, film photo scans, photo editing software, generative artificial intelligence, and combinations thereof. These technological innovations allow us to produce novel new imagery and even new knowledge derived from our media assets, but at the same time, they can confuse and even deceive us. The problematic credibility of media assets online is ubiquitously understood by all, but the complexity of the problem is understood by few.  Old buzz words such as ‘fake news’ and new ones such as ‘AIGC’ and ‘deep fakes’ allow us to label the problem, but not characterize the nuances inherent in judging the credibility of the images we consume daily, or the implications of the context within which we consume them, to take advantage of the beneficial outcomes of modern digital media production technologies while lessening the negative outcomes, we need to know if and how we can trust the media assets we encounter online.

In this discussion we will shine a light on the socio-technological nature of image credibility, considering the technological landscape of image generation and the human factors involved in ascertaining trustworthiness of images. We will then turn our attention to the advances being made in combatting the seemingly intractable and ever-increasing tsunami of uncertain online imagery. In particular, we will review a soon to be released JPEG ISO standard designed to support trust in images: JPEG Trust (ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 1), which provides a comprehensive framework for individuals, organizations, and governing institutions interested in establishing an environment of trust for the media that they use and share online.

Abstract:

Installing Energy Storage Systems (ESS), Photovoltaic (PV) and Electric Vehicle (EV) equipment into power distribution systems can be complicated and expensive. However, Power Control Systems (PCS) introduced into the 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC Article 705) now allow more ESS + PV connected power to new or existing services while minimizing bus sizes, thus making retrofits easier and optimizing new installations.  Also, UL3141 (new in 2024) and UL1741 are safety and performance standards which are used to certify PCSs, smart inverters, converters, and the interconnection of EV and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) in the system.

This presentation offers a brief review of NEC 705, and the PCS which meets UL listing requirements.  Though applicable to power systems in general, the presentation offers a residential home as an application example of the value of a PCS.  The presentation discusses how it affects busbar loading and offers a way to integrate an ESS into existing or new systems.

In summary, the PCS, and associated standards make it easier for engineers and installers to maximize the use of multiple energy inputs for efficiency and cost, while ensuring safety and reliability.

Abstract:

In photovoltaic (PV) systems connected to the AC power grid, traditional approaches employing series-connected PV panels with a single central converter often suffer from reduced efficiency and reliability due to partial shading or mismatch of PV cell characteristics. To address these challenges, the concept of differential power processing (DPP) converters has emerged, enabling independent maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of each PV panel while mitigating power loss under mismatched conditions. Various DPP system configurations are introduced and their advantages and trade-offs discussed. Additionally, recent research comparing bidirectional flyback and split-inductor boost converter topologies for PV-to-bus DPP systems is presented. Experimental results demonstrate a converter efficiency improvement of 14.7% over traditional flyback converters, offering promising avenues for enhancing the efficiency and reliability of PV systems.

Bridging the Gap Between Deep Learning Theory and Practice
Date:
April 23rd
5:30 PM (1 hour)
Abstract:

Despite the widespread proliferation of neural networks, the mechanisms through which they operate so successfully are not well understood.  In this talk, we will first explore empirical and theoretical investigations into neural network training and generalization and what they can tell us about why deep learning works.  Then, we will examine a recent line of work on algorithm learning.  While neural networks typically excel at pattern matching tasks, we consider whether neural networks can learn algorithms that scale to problem instances orders of magnitude larger than those seen during training.

MOVE Tech Talk - Apr 2024 - Exploiting Learning and Sparcity for Joint Radar Communications
Date:
April 23rd
5:00 PM (1.5 hours)
Abstract:

Recent interest in joint radar-communications (JRC) has led to the design of novel signal processing techniques to recover information from an overlaid radar-communications signal as well as transmit a common signal for both systems. In this talk, we focus on two important tools for the design and signal processing of JRC systems: learning and sparsity. The interest in learning-based JRC is driven largely by the need to solve difficult nonconvex optimization problems inherent in a JRC design as well as to address the highly dynamic channel environments. Toward fully realizing the coexistence/co-design of both radar and communications, the optimization of resources for both sensing and wireless communications modalities is crucial. But the optimization-based approaches suffer from high computational complexity and their performance strongly relies on factors such as perfect channel conditions, specific constraints, and mobility. In this context, learning techniques provide robust performance at an upfront training cost. We discuss applying learning to various JRC aspects including channel estimation, antenna selection, resource allocation, and wideband beamforming. The second half of the talk focuses on exploiting sparsity in a general spectral coexistence scenario, wherein the channels and transmit signals of both radar and communications systems are unknown at the receiver. In this dual-blind deconvolution (DBD) problem, a common receiver admits a multi-carrier wireless communications signal that is overlaid with the radar signal reflected off multiple targets. The communications and radar channels are represented by continuous-valued range-time and Doppler velocities of multiple transmission paths and multiple targets. We exploit the sparsity of both channels to solve the highly ill-posed DBD problem by casting it into a sum of multivariate atomic norms (SoMAN) minimization. Toward the end of the talk, we focus on highlighting emerging JRC scenarios, particularly at mm-Wave and THz frequencies, vehicular applications, distributed radar-communications networks, intelligent surfaces, and aerial channels.

The talk will explore how music is digitally represented using features analogous to building a fingerprint for each song. The presentation then explores various dimensionality reduction techniques for music feature analysis. The speakers present a novel approach using representation learning in lower dimensions to evaluate the efficacy of mel-spectrogram features in capturing music characteristics across diverse languages. By visualizing the features in transformed spaces, the speakers explain how insights can be gained into fine-grained attributes like vocalist timbre, gender, language, and industry prominence. Spectral and non-spectral algorithms, including PCA, t-SNE, and UMAP, are employed to analyze music datasets. The speakers’ findings demonstrate UMAP's superior performance in discerning subtle musical nuances. The research paper that the speakers co-authored on a similar topic won the best paper award at the 10th ICMC, a Springer conference in 2024. The audience will discover how machines are learning the language of music, opening doors for new music exploration and analysis tools.
